tonsil Definition

One of a pair of small, oval immune tissue masses, located on both sides of the posterior pharynx (throat) in the throat that serve to protect the body from viruses or bacteria entering through the mouth. The tonsils may become inflamed and enlarged, a condition known as tonsillitis, which can be a chronic or acute problem.
