A group of synthetic steroid compounds with weak estrogenic activity and used in biopharmaceuticals and hormone therapy, often to reduce the risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women or in the treatment of prostate cancer. They are synthetic analogs of estradiol and are often referred to as selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs).
