Definition

An individual who, as a result of atypical endocrine development, has reproductive organs that are not clearly male or female, even though the external genitalia appear to be those of the typical sex. For example, a pseudohermaphrodite born with male external genitalia may have a uterus and ovaries, while someone born with female external genitalia may have testes or other male internal reproductive organs. The term typically applies to individuals with disorders of sex development (DSD).
