In South African history, a derogatory term referring to immigrants from eastern Asia, particularly from China. Originated as a racial slur, it was used during the South African mining era to refer to Chinese laborers who came to South Africa to work in gold mines and other industries. Although now considered offensive, the term is sometimes used in historical texts to discuss the social and economic aspects of Chinese immigration during that period.
