A device, originating in the late 19th century, for recording and reproducing sound by means of a stylus that traces the grooves of a phonographic record and converts them into electrical signals amplified in a loudspeaker. It has been succeeded in modern times by more advanced recording technologies like the compact disc and the digital audio player.
