Definition

A misspelling or a variant of 'gessoes,' which refers to plaster or gypsum that is mixed with glue to create a surface for painting or other decorative work on wood, plaster, or other materials. Gesso is applied as a ground to give an even surface to a support onto which paint, pigment, collage, or other materials will be applied. It is often used as a base for painting, giving the surface texture and a protective layer.
