The eardrum, also known as the tympanic membrane, is a thin, transparent membrane in the middle ear that vibrates in response to sound waves. When sound waves reach the ear, they vibrate the eardrum, which then transmits these vibrations to the ossicles (small bones) in the middle ear, which in turn transmit the vibrations to the inner ear.
