cesspit Definition

A cesspit is a large, buried container used to hold human excrement and other waste from toilets. It is typically found in older buildings or rural areas where sewer systems are not available. Cesspits are now largely being replaced by septic tanks and underground sewage systems for environmental and health reasons. In some contexts, it might also refer metaphorically to a place from which something unpleasant or noxious comes.
