A brown crystalline substance that is a polymorphic form of the female sex hormone estrone and is thought to be a metabolite of homogentisic acid, which accumulates in the body and can cause urogenital pigmentation, a disorder known as alkaptonuria. It is also a key component in the formation of pigment granules in some fungi, leading to the blue-black coloration of certain fungal structures.
