Wessex Definition

An ancient kingdom in what is now southern England, specifically in the area around the southwest region known as the Salisbury Plain. It later became part of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex, which expanded its territories to cover most of southern England. The name is derived from the Old English 'Wēseaxe', meaning 'the people of the Weaxa' (an archaic name for the tribe).
