Varanasi, also known as Benares or Kashi, is an ancient city on the banks of the Ganges River in northern India, regarded as one of the seven sacred cities in Hinduism and a major centre for Hindu pilgrimage. It is also known for its numerous shrines, ghats (steps leading to the river), and scholarly traditions.
