Shiite Definition

A member or follower of the Shi’a sect of Islam, usually distinguished from Sunni Muslims. Shiites believe that the next Imam (leader/priest) after the Prophet Muhammad was Ali, who was the first cousin and son-in-law of the prophet. They also believe in the importance of the twelve Imams who succeeded the Prophet Muhammad and are considered infallible.
